About Yiya’s

Published by

Having lived in Shorecrest for the past eight years, Yiya’s owners Abbie Cuellar and Delsa Bernardo had long hoped that someone would open an authentic Cuban bakery in the neighborhood.

After eight years of hoping, the savvy pair took matters into their own hands buying the old Shorecrest Cleaners on 79th Street, and setting out to turn it into the hippest Cuban bakery from north of Havana.

They finally made their dream a reality in December 2008, when they opened the doors to Yiya’s Bakery.

The inspiration behind Yiya’s Bakery was Abbie’s mother, Julia Rosa Lima, affectionately known as Yiya.  Yiya left Cuba in the late fifties but never forgot her traditions or her mother’s delicious recipes.  Her passion for her food and her family meant that holidays always saw a house full of family, feasting on traditional desserts like flan, dulce de leche and buñuelos.  Visitors never left her home without having had their cafecito and a dessert, and no matter what your trobles might have been, her cafe con leche and pastelitos always made it better.  Yiya’s hopes to share some of these same sweet moments with you.
